Balrampur is a district Headquarters of Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh. It is located on the banks of River Rapti. It is sited at a distance of 160 km away from the state Headquarters Lucknow and 620 km away from the national capital Delhi. People of all religions and communities reside in the city where Hindus forms the majority of the population followed by Muslims. The locals in the city speak Hindi and Urdu. 

The city is famous for BCM i.e. the Balrampur Chini Mills Limited which is the highest producers of sugar in India. The BCM was established in the city prior Indian Independence and was owned by the BIC i.e. the British India Corporation. 

Geography of Balrampur

Balrampur is elevated at a height of 106 meters above sea level which is 348 feet and it has its coordinates at 27.43° North latitude and 82.18° East longitude. It is surrounded by Shriduttganj Tehsil in the East, Katra Bazar Tehsil in the west, Shravasti Tehsil in the west and Itiathok Tehsil in the South. Balrampur city is sited on the border of its district Balrampur which makes it much closer to its neighbouring district Shrawasti towards its west. Summers are hot and winters are very cool in the city. A tributary of River Rapti flows in the western regions of the city which the main river flows very near to the borders of the city towards its North East. The city also homes few small ponds or talabs.

As per 2011 population census the city recorded a total population of 82488 out of which male constitutes 42997 and the rest  of 39491 constitutes female population. The city homes 12638 families within its boundary. The population density in the city is recorded as 2242.8 people in an inch per sq km in an area of 36.14 sq km. The population growth in the city is increased by + 1.12 % per year from the last census year of 2001. 

The total number of children in the city between 0 to 6 years of age is recorded as 10756 out of which 5529 constitute boys and the rest of 5227 constitute girls. The child population in Balrampur contributes 13.04 % of the total city population. The sex ratio in the city is recorded as 918 female out of 1000 male and the child sex ratio in the city is recorded as 945 girls out of 1000 boys. Both the female and child sex ratio in the city is high than the average Uttar Pradesh state female and child sex ratio of 912 and 902 respectively.

The average literacy rate in the city is recorded as 67.75 % i.e. 48597. The male literacy rate is recorded as 72.31 % i.e. 27094 and the female literacy rate is recorded as 62.76 % i.e. 21503. The total number of illiterates in Balrampur is recorded as 33891. Out of the total city population nearly 6.59 % i.e. 5436 of people belong to Schedule Caste and 0.08 % i.e. 67 belongs to Schedule Tribe. Out of total Balrampur population nearly 61 % are Hindus, 37 % are Muslims, 1.4 % is Jains and the rest of 0.6 % includes Sikhs and Buddhists.

The total number of people employed in the city is recorded as 23614 out of which male constitutes 19895 and female constitutes 3719. Out of the total working population in Balrampur nearly 68.63 % i.e. 16207 are engaged in main work and the rest of 31.37 % i.e. 7407 are engaged in marginal work.

Balrampur one of the three sub districts or Tehsils in Balrampur district apart from Tulsipur and Utraula. The city is the tehsil Headquarters of Balrampur Tehsil. Balrampur is also one of the nine administrative blocks in Balrampur district. The city operates under Devipatan administrative division of Uttar Pradesh state administration.
